The Golden Eagle Wrestling Club opened their 2017-2018 Folkstyle season at the Rocky Mountain Nationals first ever black light tournament, Cosmic Clash. The Golden eagles took six wrestlers to the sensory overload tournament and half of them had a chance to wrestle for a championship placement.
Cooper Torpy lead the Golden Eagles with a perfect record of three wins. Two of Torpy's wins came by way of falls. Torpy opened his tournament with a first period fall against Carlos Campos (Monte Vista, CO). In the semi-finals, Torpy battled top-seeded Xiaver Gonzales (Albuquerque, NM) and won on a major decision to reach the championship match. He finished the tournament with a fall over 2017, CO Rookie State Runner-Up Tristan Pino (Peyton, CO) in the third period.
Henry McDoniel placed 2nd place with a "True Challenge" win after securing the Bronze medal. McDoniel won his opening match against Keyon Alston (Ignacio, CO) with a first-period fall. However, McDoniel fell to Jay Hammarsten (Woodbury, MN) in the first period by fall. McDoniel then had a bye into the consolation where he won by fall over Osias Goodtracks (Ignacio, CO). He followed up his win by pinning 2017, CO Novice State Champion Ryder Martinez (Lakewood, CO) in the 3rd period in the True Second Challenge Match.
Griffin Langer placed 2nd with a first period fall over Lanajade Adkins (Colorado Springs, CO) and a major decision over 2017, CO Rookie State Bronze Medalist, Lanajade Adkins (Colorado Springs, CO). Langer fell to Ramon Hernandez (Denver, CO) in the championship match.
Ethan Diaz, Brent Langer, and Cameron Flores competed in the open division for their age and weight. All three came up short in securing a win but battled tough through each match. Levi Beatty entered his first national tournament and lost both matches but showed improvement from the first and second match.
Golden Eagle Wrestling Club continues their pre-season schedule with their next tournament on October, 21st in Pueblo, CO.
