The Golden Eagle Wrestling Club took five wrestlers to California to compete at the inaugural USA Folkstyle Nationals on January 6th, 2018. USA Folkstyle Showcase is a part of the Rocky Mountain National Tournament organization.
The team placed all five wrestlers at this tournament. "It was a great trip," said, Coach McDoniel. We had an opportunity to compete against California wrestlers and experience their style of wrestling. We were able to meet and develop relationships with other clubs in California. 3G Wrestling Club invited the Golden Eagles to their final warm-up practice the Thursday before the tournament. The The Golden Eagles will replicate this opportunity for 3G wrestlers if they come to Colorado for Rocky Mountain Nationals.
Overall, the team had one tournament champion, one silver medalist, one bronze medalist, three fourth-place finishers, and one sixth place finisher. "We performed well but could have done better," said McDoniel. Some of our wrestlers were tired from the travel and lost their energy late in the tournament. It was a good learning experience for us regarding future out-of-state tournaments.
One of the tournament highlights was Henry McDoniel wrestling Dan Cormier's (Current Light HWT, UFC Champion) son DC II in both the 61 and HWT division and scoring wins.
The team finished in 10th place overall at the tournament. Below is the final results
Henry McDoniel 6U, 61 lbs Champion
Henry McDoniel, 6U, HWT 2nd Place
Jackson McDoniel, 10U, 85 lbs 3rd Place
Jackson McDoniel, 10, 90 lbs 4th Place
David Bond, 15U, 116 lbs 4th Place
Cameron Flores, 15U, 190 lbs 4th Place
Ethan Diaz, 12U, 70 lbs, 6th Place
The trip was a mix of work and play while in California with visiting Naval Amphibious Base Coronado, Island and meeting some US Navy SEALs to learn about mental toughness and the process needed to be an elite warrior. They will return to Colorado and compete Big Horn Nationals on January 14th.
